Work-related foot injuries are of two kinds. The first type of injury is caused by crushing, punctures, lacerations and sprains. The second type of injuries is a result of slips, falls and trips. Trips and falls do not cause foot injury always but a lapse in foot safety can play a huge role.
In most cases, it is found that foot injuries occur when the workers are not in compliance with the rules. And then there’s the case of workers having problems with their legs or feet because they wore incorrect footwear or because they stand for long at work.
There’s no doubt that it is important to wear safety footwear at work. However, it is even more important to get footwear that is comfortable as well as safe.
According to the Personal Equipment at Work Regulations 1999, the employer must provide protective equipment for jobs where the risk has been identified and can’t be controlled. This includes footwear. If you provide footwear, it must be provided free of any charges and you must also provide instructions for using them safely.
Choosing the Right Footwear
When providing special footwear, ensure that it fits perfectly and allows the toes enough wiggle room (at least 1cm gap between the end of the shoe and the longest toe).
The regulations also require that you provide a choice of shoes and involve a worker representative in choosing the shoes that are being offered to the employees. This helps ensure that the employees wear the safety footwear.
Where safety footwear is not a requirement, the employers must provide advice on wearing suitable footwear.
Here are some tips to help you get the right fit when choosing footwear:
- Measure both the feet as they might not be the same size
- Try both the shoes on
- Make sure there’s enough space at the front of a shoe so that your toes can move naturally when you are waking
- Ensure there’s a gap of about 1cm between the end of the shoe and your longest toe
- Getting a good fit does not mean that you have to buy expensive shoes.
